Our 8" Wooden Embryo Separators feature a blade end that is used to apply precise pressure to separate fissures holding embryos together and a rounded end that is used to further open up space between embryos so they can be safely separated.

Each Wooden Embryo Separator is triple-treated with specially formulated wood oil that penetrates deep into the pores to protect the tool from environmental damage. This oil seal hardens to create a barrier that protects the wooden separator from damaging water and soil and minimizes the transfer of harmful bacteria and fungus to the embryos you are working on.

Technique to remove embryos from the outer shell:

When mango seeds are fresh, the shell is very strong and robust, making removing embryos extremely difficult. We've found that this process becomes nearly effortless when seeds are allowed time to grow for a few weeks in moist soil. Plant your seeds about 1" deep in soil, keep the soil consistently moist, and in a few weeks the shell will begin to soften and break down. During this time the embryos are also rapidly growing and they will split the shell making the it easy to peel off. Check your seeds periodically to see if they are ready. Turpentine Mango seeds typically contain between 3-7 individual embryos.

Once the embryos are liberated from the outer shell they can begin to be teased apart. Embryos at this stage can sometimes be separated from each other using just your fingers, however it is our experience that often embryos can still be tightly attached to one another. In this case, a wooden embryo separator should be used to help gently crack the fissures holding embroys together (avoid using metal tools because they can damage the embryos).

As soon as the embryos are separated they can be individually planted into pots filled with soil. Turpentine mangoes grow super fast, so it's important to allow each new seedling ample room for root development. We suggest planting directly into a 12" pots, but if space is limited you may use pots as small as 6" in diameter and repot into larger 12" pots within 3-6 months.

To store your Wooden Embyo Separator simply wipe clean with a damp cloth and keep in a dry place.
